Motivated to Be Healthy for Life? How Can You Not Be?

Carole Pagan
© 2005

You've heard it a million times - Eat a balanced diet concentrating
on your 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables, cut down fats, and
get up and get some exercise. Simple advice, yet not many follow it.

A new survey by the American Public Health Association conducted
in conjunction with National Public Health Week 2005, April 4-10.
and asked Americans 55 and older to identify what they think
stands in their way.

Most respondents - over 75%- said they believe diet and exercise
play more of a role than genetics in deciding how healthy they will
be as they age. They identified a lack of motivation as the primary
barrier standing between them and an active lifestyle, followed
closely by money and time.

Can someone please explain this to me? How can you not be
motivated to feel better?

I've pretty much always been thin. There were a couple of
times when my weight shot up, but I wouldn't accept it.
I got it back down.

When I feel out of shape, I make sure to get more exercise.

When I know I haven't been eating as well as I should, I
correct it. I personally don't understand all these wacky diets,
pills, programs, and all this other stuff designed to keep your
wallet lighter. Hey, I guess that's one less bulge!

You can eat foods to prevent cancer, improve your energy,
improve your eyesight, keep you from getting colds, improve
your heart health, improve your mood, even improve your
sexual performance.

A little less weight and a little more exercise, and you'll have
decreased your risk of a multitude of lifestyle diseases including
diabetes, heart disease, and many cancers. You'll move better.
You'll feel better. You'll look better - longer.

What's not to motivate? Why on earth would you choose to subject
yourself to all these risks and pains? Why would you choose to feel
terrible all the time?

Older is wiser. According to the survey, people 75 and older were
much more likely than their younger counterparts to say they were
living a healthy lifestyle. Two-thirds of the older group said they
were already doing things right, compared to only 38 percent of
those aged 55 to 64. But if you're waiting until you're 75 to start
taking better care of yourself, you may not be able to undo the
damage to your body.

A man I know just turned 94. He makes sure to get exercise
everyday. He's still down in the basement working on a project
that he hopes to get patented. His wife is 87. She says she has
Parkinson's, but I rarely see any indication of it.

I know a lot of people in their 70s who are living life fully.
Boating, traveling, many are still working - by choice. They
stay active physically and mentally. To look at them, you
would never imagine they were even over 60.

How do you want to live the rest of your life? You can still have
a decent quality of life into your 90's. But you have to start now.
The pay-off is huge - Get motivated!
